Does a file open in the wrong program, or show an unexpected icon? FileTypesMan lets you inspect and change the Windows file-type entries behind those behaviors, including their registered actions and properties.

What appears in the file-type list?

FileTypesMan presents registered extensions and file types in a main table. Select an entry to inspect details such as its description, MIME and perceived type, internal type name and flags. The list also includes icon information, making it easier to identify the entry associated with a file's displayed icon.

A separate actions table shows commands associated with the selected type. These entries control options such as commands available from a file's context menu. Some actions can be marked Extended, which makes the menu item appear only when the Shift key is held while opening the context menu.

Changing an association or context-menu command

Select an extension or type to edit its properties, then add, change, or remove actions in its action list. When a type is shared by multiple extensions, the program identifies the extensions that could be affected by editing it.

  • Use the icon field and icon-selection dialog to choose a file-type icon.
  • Mark an action Extended to show it only when Shift is held.
  • Copy actions and paste them into another extension's action list.

Finding entries and exporting details

For a large registry of associations, use the list's columns to locate an extension and inspect its registered properties. FileTypesMan can also save file-type information as CSV, HTML, text, or XML, including through command-line save options. A selected-extension command-line option can target one extension when exporting its actions.

If loading icons causes a hang or crash, the program includes an option to skip icon loading.

Pros

  • Shows file extensions and registered types alongside MIME and perceived-type details
  • Add, edit, or remove actions tied to a file type
  • Export file-type information in CSV, HTML, text, or XML
  • Skip icon loading to avoid problems with troublesome icons

Cons

  • The Choose Icon dialog may stop responding on some Windows 10 systems
