Not sure exactly which Intel chip is in your PC, or whether it supports virtualization for a VM or emulator? Intel Processor Identification Utility is Intel's free tool that names the processor, checks its speed and lists the technologies it supports.
Which processor details appear?
When launched, the utility scans the system and identifies the Intel CPU it finds. The results include the processor model, its operating frequency, cache information, and supported technologies. This is handy when the exact chip matters for checking a PC build, documenting a processor, or investigating a compatibility question.
The reported speed also gives a quick point of comparison when a processor seems to be running outside its expected operating range. The utility presents CPU-specific information in one place, without requiring users to assemble it from several Windows system panels.

Checking processor features
Feature details can answer questions such as whether the installed CPU supports virtualization or a particular instruction set. That distinction matters when an application or configuration depends on a processor capability: the utility gives users a way to check the chip's reported features before looking elsewhere for the cause of a problem.
Version 8 supports 7th Gen Core processors and newer, including Core Ultra. The older Legacy version for 6th Gen and earlier chips was withdrawn in October 2024, so those PCs need another tool such as CPU-Z.
Operating speed and verification
Intel Processor Identification Utility tests the processor and reports the speed at which it is running. This provides a basic check when troubleshooting suspected CPU performance or verifying hardware after an upgrade. Processor identification and feature reporting are its central tasks; it is intended for systems with Intel CPUs.
Pros
- Reports the installed Intel processor model and operating frequency
- Shows cache details and supported processor technologies
- Provides information about virtualization and instruction-set support
Cons
- Supports only 7th Gen Intel processors and newer
- Needs an internet connection
- No temperature or load monitoring
System requirements: Windows 10, Windows 11 · 64-bit only · 7th Gen and newer Intel production processor · Active internet connection · 4 GB memory · 25 MB free storage · WXGA minimum display resolution (1366 × 768) · DirectX 9 or higher
Can it check whether a CPU supports virtualization?
Yes. The CPU Technologies tab shows Intel VT-x and other supported features and instruction sets.
Does it work with older Intel processors?
No. The current version supports 7th Gen and newer; the Legacy version for older chips was removed in October 2024.
Does it work on AMD processors?
No. It only identifies Intel CPUs.
Why does it need an internet connection?
It looks up processor details and specifications from Intel online.
