MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 videos can play in compatible Windows apps, and supported files can show thumbnails in File Explorer. MPEG-2 Video Extension adds the decoding support those workflows need.
Which video files can it decode?
The extension handles video encoded with MPEG-1 or MPEG-2. MPEG, MPG, TS, M2TS, and AVI files may contain video encoded with these codecs; MP4 and MKV files can contain them too. The filename extension alone does not determine the video codec, so a file in one of these containers needs MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video for this extension to apply.
Can it play videos in Windows apps?
Compatible built-in apps, including Photos and Movies & TV, can use the added codec support to play MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 video. The extension works behind the scenes as a decoder; it does not provide a separate player or playback screen.
File Explorer can also display thumbnails for supported video files, making them easier to identify among files with similar names.
Does it help with DVD video?
DVD movies commonly use MPEG-2 video, so the extension can provide the decoding support needed by a compatible player app. It addresses the video codec; DVD playback still depends on the app handling the disc and its playback features.
Pros
